BEWARE
Checks written on insufficient funds and Closed Accounts
The past month has brought numerous checks from various mail-order dealers written on “closed accounts” and “Insufficient Funds.” We have certainly received our share of them. Some of these people are deliberately engaging in Mail Fraud. If you receive a large check and cannot afford to take it as a loss if it bounces, simply hold the order until the check clears. Send the customer a letter informing him when the order will be shipped. It is not unprofessional to hold an order until the check clears. It is however, to keep your customer in the dark about a shipment date. A second warning light you should consider is if a phone number is included. Most dealers will include it on their check or on their letterhead. This is the professional way to do business. If you receive a large check without a phone number, a red light should flash.
If you feel you are the subject of mail fraud, report it to your local postmaster. Tell him the situation. Request a mail-fraud report PS 8165. After completing the form and mailing it to the postmaster in your state you might consider sending a letter to the Better Business Bureau in the city in which the order originated. Don’t forget to send a copy of the letter to the Attorney General of the state involved.

COUPLE FORMS BUSINESS TO ASSIST MAIL-ORDER DEALERS
Meet Doreen Moccabee and
Michael Treaster.
Their story starts out just like every other person in mail order; the marvelous feeling of working at home. They never imagined how costly it would be for postage, printing, advertising and other necessities. Within a few months they bought their first copier to save on printing. When they bought their first replacement toner cartridge for $129.00, they realized there had to be a better way. After tiring weeks of investigating different avenues and weighing alternatives, they decided on a business that would not only save them money, but “every” mail order dealer using toner cartridges. All those tiring weeks of investigating and research resulted in M-T Laser Cartridges. They can re-charge your current cartridges for about half of what you can buy a new one for. They will even buy your old cartridges
Instead of you throwing them away.
Doreen or Michael will be glad to discuss your current needs. You can contact them at M-T Laser Cartridges 221 Demorest Avenue Columbus, Ohio 43204 Phone: (614) 276-6488.

LEWIS PAPIER
Did you know that when John Wayne died, his colon weighed nearly 80 pounds! He died of colon cancer. (NOTE: A normal colon weighs 11 to 17 pounds)
When a person eats processed, fried or overcooked foods, devitalized starches, sugar, excessive amounts of salt and high-fat meats, their colon cannot possibly be efficient, even if they have a bowel movement two or three times a day. These types of foods leave a coating of slime and mucus on the inner lining of the colon like plaster on a wall. Eventually, this coating gradually becomes so thick that there is only a small hole through the center. This coating not only prevents nutrients from being absorbed but also creates a breeding ground for unhealthy organisms also known as parasites!
Would you like to find out more about how parasites can cause all kinds of health problems?
I can send you a free audiotape called “America’s #1 Epidemic.” The tape sheds light on how parasites can cause a wide variety of health challenges such as chronic fatigue, memory loss, skin problems, low energy, migraines, arthritis , gas and bloating, itchy ears, premature aging, PMS, joint pain and wrinkling of the skin, just to name a few.
I’ll send you a free audiotape and catalog of Unique Herbal Remedies from Awareness Corporation, which has a complete Cleanse and Rebuild Program to get you better. Call 1-800-206-6022 and leave your name and address and phone number or e-mail me at Turfseer@aol.com

Be considerate!
Not everyone has calligraphic penmanship. The majority of the American people simply CANNOT write. If you are one of these, try printing your letter. If you have a typewriter or computer, use it. That also shows a little professionalism on your part.
Don’t send letters written in pencil. (Unless you are in the first grade) If you are one of those that have poor penmanship, a pencil only complicates matters. A pencil does not always write clearly depending on your hand. It can also smear in the mail rendering it completely useless!
Do not simply enclose money in an envelope and mail it to a supplier. Remember, most mail-order dealers have more than one offer; many costing the same price. How is the dealer to determine what you want? Whenever possible, make a copy of the ad and enclose it with your order. If you do not wish to lose your only copy of the advertisement, at least explain what you want. Mail-order dealers are not fortunetellers. If you don’t explain what you want, how do you expect them to ship exactly what you requested.
Many mail-order dealers pay mailing services to handle much of their mailing. Please tell the supplier who mailed the circular to you. It puts a feather in the mailer’s cap and also exhibits extreme professionalism on your part.
A little consideration goes a long way and is crurtail in mail order. Editor

NOT ALL MAIL ORDER
DEALERS ARE CROOKS
By Charlie R. Brown
I am continually having copies of various mail-order ad-sheets crossing my desk calling this dealer or that dealer a crook. Many of these instances are based on the fact that certain ads call for payment in the form of cash. This is based in part on the amount of money in question. Many of the ads only ask for a dollar, perhaps two or five. A postal money order requires the recipient to travel to the post office to cash it, often using the amount of the payment in gas. Where is the fun in that? When a check is sent on a $2. item their bank, charges a minimum “deposit” charge, thus lowering the value of the check. In addition, I have received checks in the amount of $1.00, (one from a minister with the church name on the check) which bounced higher than a kite. Not only did I lose the dollar but also my bank charged me $18.00 penalty. If they had re-deposited the check a second time, I would have incurred another $18.00 penalty. By this time, I am already $37.00 in the hole, not to mention my postage on the order to the customer and the cost of the material I mailed out.
I received a discouraging letter from a customer in Grand Prairie, Texas who was belittled and called a crook just because he asked for cash or a postal money order. He was dubbed a crook. Hugh is a disabled person who is taking care of his mother on a full time basis. He is retired and on a fixed income. He subsidizes his income by mail orders. He finds it difficult to get to the post office to cash checks due to the distance, and he wants to avoid the high charges charged by banks on small transactions. He asks for cash or a postal money order. This is an admirable trait that this man refuses welfare or government handouts, but struggles on his own to make ends meet.
Many of these bleeding heart do-gooders, print their ad-sheets on a home copier, often so dark from a bad copier drum, that it is barely legible. Yet, they still strive to call the kettle black.
Another attack is often on the circular mailer. There may be those who advertise mailing services but don’t comply. There are still those that actually mail what they say. Many mailers advertise “Big Mails” for a certain amount of stamps or perhaps a dollar or two. The mailing under these conditions is usually slow, but eventually, they do all wind up in the mail. I enclose a FREE big mail with each order I ship. My big mails usually contain 25 to 50 pages. The big mails are free, simply as a way of saying “thank-you” to a much-appreciated customer.
The next time you hear of someone being dishonest, ask yourself why are they being slandered? Have you had any dealings with this person? Have you had dealings with the person spreading malicious and damaging gossip? If you have had dealings with the person being slandered, why not notify the person who sent you the damaging material and simply state your thoughts on the situation.
The mail order trade is made up of strong stock. These days of financial stress leaves many of us in the red at the end of the month. With all the negative backbiting that is going on around us, it is no wonder that we are getting a bad reputation.
I have been in the mail-order business over 40 years. I sent two children through school as a mail order dealer. I paid for a grad course in computer electronics to further my education. I publish a monthly newspaper and an assortment of smaller mail-order publications. I have been called a crook simply because I refused to accept an ad containing profanity. Gil lambasted me all over the nation claiming that I am not even a publisher, but a wanna-be.
The next time you feel someone has sold you a bum steer, let that person know how you feel. Simply state that you think you were ripped off and ask for an adjustment or a refund. Make up your own mind if someone has misled you and deserves the title of crook, or is it simply a case of misunderstanding or lack of caring or jealousy.
GROVER L. ALLEN

Grover L. Allen has been in the mail order business on and off between Florida and Alabama. He has been very active at his current address for the past five years. Grover says he holds down a regular job and does mail order after work. His heart is really in mail order which is evident by the enormous number of programs he promotes he co-publishes. He co-publishes over 20 publications and offers anyone who wants to stretch their ad dollar a special discount offer on 17 of the top publications in the nation.
MAIL ORDER 101
(Mail order basics in a Nutshell)
The past fifty years in mail order has taught me a thing or two. I no longer publish as the papers I used to because of government red tape. (Postage being number one)
There are a number of very good publishers who do a remarkable job. Glenn Bridgeman of G and B Records has been in the business for many years. He has fought the many postage increases, rubber checks, and irate customers, customers who move without notifying Glenn causes many dollars of wasted postage. Newspapers will not be forwarded. Newspapers delivered to an address where the recipient has recently moved from will be left at that address for the new tenant to dispose of. It will not be forwarded.
Don’t be one of those advertisers who send a poorly printed copy to a publisher for advertising purposes. Remember, if you can’t see the print, the camera certainly won’t. The results will be discouraging. You won’t get any results from the ad because no one can read it. You have also wasted a month of no income from the poorly considered ad. If you send ads from an inkjet printer, always send it utilizing the highest quality available. If your ink ribbon or cartridge is dry, you will produce an ad of such inferior quality that no publisher will be able to print it satisfactorily. If you absolutely must submit such an ad for publication, print two or more ads using the best quality you can achieve from your printer. With a yellow chisel point magic marker highlighter, gently go over each line of type one time. Do not stop in the middle of a line and start over from the beginning. That will cause dark spots in the line. A single swipe will quite often darken up your poor quality ad to the point the camera can see it. Do a couple of ads and submit the best one.
Cheap advertising rates often represents cheap cons. Use a little brain matter when applying to these offers. If you see an ad advertising your ad sent to 10,000 for a dollar, stop! That should raise a flag. Consider how much postage it would take to mail those 10,000 copies. Then count the ads and multiply the number of ads by $1.00. Does the math add up? The print quality of cheap advertising should also be considered. Many ads call for a one-inch ad sent to 1,000 potential customers for only a buck or two. Use the same math. Another thing to check is the quality of the print. Wet your finger and rub the paper. Does the ink smear? If so, it is probably done on a computer printer, and only a few copies at best.
Exchange ads are another way of getting your ads in circulation. If you see an ad with the letters “X-
Ad” anywhere within the text, that is the code for exchange mailers. It means that person has agreed to perform a service to get that ad printed free. It usually means that person will reciprocate by printing an ad of equal size in his or her publication. In some cases, it means that the person receiving the free ad will mail a hundred copies or more. You can only do this if you mail on a daily basis. Otherwise, you are not holding up your end of the bargain.
Exchange Mailing is another way of getting your ads in circulation. Many dealers will exchange circulars with you. You have to prove that you are actually doing the mailing. You can send them a hundred circulars and they will send you the same amount and size. It is a good idea to code your circulars by manually hand printing the initials of the person doing your exchange mailings at the end of your name or somewhere within parentheses in your mailing address. That way when you receive orders their initials will be on your mailing envelope. This is the perfect way to find if your co-op partner is doing a good job. If you don’t get at least 2% response from their mailing, you are wasting your time and money.
Big Mail Wanted listings are a good source of free mailing names. There are dozens available. The best ones are those that have to pay to get on the list. There are dozens around. A copy of INTRODUCTION TO MAIL ORDER contains a wide variety of free names.
Free information in many cases is a scam. When an ad says “FREE” that should be self-explanatory. Yet I continually see ads saying “FREE INFORMATION! SEND $3.00 FOR POSTAGE AND HANDLING. Much of this free information comes in a #10 envelope with a first class stamp. The rest of your $3.00 or whatever the ad calls for is profit for the recipient. When an ad says “FREE” it is okay to ask for one or three first class stamps for postage. A first class stamp will mail a #10 envelope and five sheets of 20# paper. Two stamps will mail ten sheets. Most free information does not contain half that number of sheets. When mailing five sheets in a #10 envelope, firmly crease the sheets. Place them in the envelope and crease the envelope. If the envelope does not freely go through the sorting machine at the post office, it is flagged and extra postage is charged to the receiver. That piece of mail is handled by hand instead of machine. The weight of the envelope and five sheets of paper cannot exceed one ounce. Anything over one ounce requires additional postage.
Ads promising you can make thousands of dollars a week should be given serious thought. When you receive ads of this sort, examine the quality of the advertising piece. Many I receive are written by hand and photo copied. Nothing this shoddy is going to make you thousands of dollars in a year. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
Typesetting prices and quality should be considered before employing this service. Typesetting should be done on a good laser printer. Inkjet printers do a good job as long as the cartridges are new. After some wear, they tend to get dusty and render less than satisfactory quality. It is a good idea to send a self addressed, stamped envelope to anyone you are considering for such a job. Ask for samples of their work. Any respectable mail order dealer will be more than happy to comply.
Where you place ads should be paramount in your plans. Single ad sheets are a good source of advertising but usually don’t have the circulation that a periodical will have. The simple fact is that you can’t print only a hundred newspapers. You have to print a minimum of 1,000 in most cases. Some newspapers will print 500 but that runs the cost up on small quantities. Look for newspapers that you see on a regular basis. Check the circulation. Most of them advertise 10,000 circulation. It is a good idea to run an ad for newspapers to advertise in. Most publishers who see your ad will send you a complimentary copy. It will usually take over a month for you to receive it. Newspapers are sent bulk mail. Unless the publisher sees your ad as the mailing is being prepared, your request will be held over until the next mailing. Most regular newsprint papers come out on a monthly basis. Some are only published quarterly. This is another thing that should be considered.
If you are just getting started in the fun world of mail order, it can be a problem finding something to sell. There are many individuals and companies that offer commission circulars. You can contact a number of them for samples of their commission circulars by simply sending them a self addressed, stamped envelope. Listed below are just a few you might contact. You can also read any mail order publication and find more names.

MAILORDER 101
Make your ads pull
By Charlie R. Brown
With the cost of advertising, postage, printing and manufacturing on the rise, we often waste our money on poor quality ads produced with little or no thought of content.
Ads should catch the prospective customer’s attention when he first sees the ad. Rethinking the ad does this. The headline should tell a story. When an ad does not catch the eye of a prospective customer, a sale is lost. A second chance of making a sale is less than one percent.
Increasing the ad size is a good way of attracting attention to an ad. A larger ad lends itself to a bolder headline resulting in more eye appeal. This is a sure way of attracting more orders.
Don’t advertise something as “free” and then ask for $3. or more for postage. This is widely practiced. A first grade student will be turned off by such an ad. Instead of trying to pay for postage plus the product disguised as postage, include another item in the offer and charge for it. This way the initial item will be free. Overcharging for postage in any ad is a dead turn off.
Place your name on as many free mailing lists as possible. This will give you a library of ideas. Hundreds of newcomers to mail order mail only one offer per envelope. This is a good sign of a prospective customer. They are usually looking for additional offers to include in their mailings.
Don’t waste postage. Five sheets of standard paper can be mailed in a #10 envelope for only one first class stamp. After sealing the envelope, flatten the envelope and the creases on the paper. This will assure the envelope going through the canceling machine at the post office. If the envelope is not properly flattened, the canceling machine will eject the envelope and it will have to be processed by hand. This will usually cause your envelope to be delivered with postage due or returned for insufficient postage. The rates for a first class stamp are contingent not only upon the basis of one ounce or less, but size and thickness is also considered.
Include appropriate clip art in ads whenever possible. Visuals always catch the eye and improve sales.
Websites are always important. When available, a website should be included in the ad below the address.
It is always a good idea to test ads. Include codes in all ads. This will tell you when and who mailed the ads. If you run the same ad in more than one publication, you always want to know who does the best mailing. Include a “Department number” after your name in all ads. Keep a record of all the codes. Change the codes each time you run an ad. This will not only tell you who mailed the ad but “when” it was mailed. If you run an ad in a publication with a large circulation with no sales, you will know who mailed it. It will also give you another important bit of information. Re-think and revise the ad.
