Checks written on Insufficient funds and
Closed Accounts
The past month has brought numerous checks from various mail-order dealers written on “closed accounts” and “Insufficient Funds.” We have certainly received our share of them. Some of these people are deliberately engaging in Mail Fraud. If you receive a large check and cannot afford to take it as a loss if it bounces, simply hold the order until the check clears. Send the customer a letter informing him when the order will be shipped. It is not unprofessional to hold an order until the check clears. It is however, to keep your customer in the dark about a shipment date. A second warning light you should consider is if a phone number is included. Most dealers will include it on their check or on their letterhead. This is the professional way to do business. If you receive a large check without a phone number, a red light should flash.
If you feel you are the subject of mail fraud, report it to your local postmaster. Tell him the situation. Request a mail-fraud report PS 8165. After completing the form and mailing it to the post master in your state you might consider sending a letter to the Better Business Bureau in the city in which the order originated. Don’t forget to send a copy of the letter to the Attorney General of the state involved.
